coliform, I think refers to bacteria from the gut (colon) so you get it from stool.

What are the sources of Coliform Bacteria?

Reply:Coliform bacteria are abundant everywhere (in the soil, water, vegetation, etc.). They are not necessarily harmful. Fecal coliforms are the ones you need to be careful of. Those are the ones (like E. coli) that come from the digestive tracts of warm-blooded animals.
