What is the economic important of bacteria?

Bacteria play a huge economic role throughout human history, starting with wine-making and cheese-making.

Today, bacteria are even more important, as genetically engineered strains are used to manufacture hormones, such as human growth hormone, insulin, and other important biological compounds, such as lung-surfactant (the mucus that lines the inside of our lungs), and citric acid. Starting in the 80's and 90's, bacteria have been used to produce plastic. Bacteria are also used to make "stone-washed" jeans, as well as to filter pollutants out of sewage, and break down oil in oil spills.
