If I bombard my food with gamma rays will it kill bacteria ?

oh, what a gud question..!!!!

well, actually answer is NO bcoz Bombardment can be done only on charged particle.. u can see by rutherford's experiment when alpha particles bombarded on aluminium foil then x rays are emmited ....

all i can say that it is interesting and logic question.. iwill appreciate..

If I bombard my food with gamma rays will it kill bacteria ?
well you said it worked on your pussy so anythings possible...
Reply:Yes, and it shouldn't really have any affect on your radiation levels as all the energy will be used on breaking chemical linkages or passes through the food.

It may create some unusual short lived molecules though...
Reply:Gamma rays are often used in the food industry. The radioisotopes preserve foods. Although the rays never come in contact with food, beta radiation kills various organisms, such as bacteria, yeast, and insects
Reply:It might kill the bacteria but it will also cause you loads of harm! You might develop cancer anywhere onj your body. And using gamma rays is a scientists job, where you exactly will you bombard your food with gamma rays?

Trust me, leave this to the experts.
Reply:Unless you have Micrococcus radiophilus in your food, but that is unlikely.

X-ray radiation will probably suffice.
Reply:Yes it can, though the sterilisation plants that do this commercially generally use cobalt-60 sources in the peta-bequerel (PBq) [ = mega-curie MCi] range. Bacteria are generally a lot hardier than us and require doses of thousands of Gray (Gy) [ = hundreds of kilo-rad krad] to kill them off. A 10 Gy whole-body dose will likely kill a human within 60 days and a 100 Gy whole-body dose could kill you in hours. Mind you cancer treatment via radiotherapy often delivers 60 Gy to the region of the tumor, though in 30 seperate applications spread over 6 weeks. Food is not radioactive after it is treated. It is likely that small quantities of interesting molecules could be made during the process, but then frying, broiling, roasting, cooking etc make copious quantities of interesting molecules too.
Reply:Keeping it in the fridge and not eating it long after the expiry date makes much more sense really....but yes...it would...depending on the actual dosage I would imagine....
Reply:That has been adequately answered, but really you do NOT want to have sterile food. Just follow proper food storage and handling procedures, watch for the expiration dates and using within so many days of opening. My dog gets into stuff sometimes when she is walked - what a scavenger - but rarely has been sick. They do get worms and other parasites from their scavenging. We have immune systems. Some bacteria is desirable and necessary! As, live cultures in yogurt. We must have a good flora of them in our stomach. Even if the bacteria were killed the TOXINS can still be in the food and even thorough cooking will not help.
Reply:Sure go for it, I'm absolutely certain that radioactive food is much healthier for you!
Reply:yes and you too! Irradiating food and eating it is bad news!
