Does Baking Soda kill germs and bacteria in your mouth when you brush your teeth with it?

I started brushing with Baking Soda and now I do not get any bleeding from my gums anymore.

Does Baking Soda kill germs and bacteria in your mouth when you brush your teeth with it?
its an alternative to toothpaste, my mother used to make me use it when we ran out, i hated it.
